To find out a little more about our Canine Business Insurance team, we sat down with Fern Kardamash to find out what her role involves and how she can help canine business clients to get the right insurance.

Can you tell us a little about your experience in insurance?

I started my role with Chris Knott Insurance in 2017 but I’ve been working in insurance for more than 14 years now. My career began in Travel Insurance for those with medical conditions, and then I moved into personal lines cover before switching to Commercial Insurance

The canine business schemes came around a couple of years ago, so I took it on alongside Adam Taylor and have been working on it ever since.

What does your current role in Canine Business Insurance involve?

There are three main aspects to my role.

When a brand-new client comes along, I chat to them to work out what type of cover they need and then put together a policy for them. I handle renewals too, so my role also involves checking in with our existing clients to see if there are any changes. If there are, I update their policies for them. I also work with clients who need mid-term adjustments because of changes to their liability.

Essentially, I provide a helping hand when it comes to figuring out Canine Business Insurance and then tailor policies to suit our clients and their needs.

What kinds of businesses should think about Canine Business Insurance?

Any kind of business or organisation that has dealings with dogs should consider putting Canine Business Insurance in place.

They could be dog walkers, groomers or dog trainers, for example. We also work with dog charities and clubs to make sure their liabilities are covered. Canine Business Insurance is also needed by those who hold dog-related events, such as a dog agility show, because they need to protect themselves against public liability

Why should dog businesses get Canine Business Insurance?

Canine Business Insurance offers our clients peace of mind in case there is damage to a third party or their property.

All dog businesses need to think about their public liability and many will also need to think about Employers’ Liability Insurance, which covers volunteers as well as paid staff. For instance, a dog walker may get someone to help out for free when they are very busy. Even if this is a friend or family member, if they get hurt or ill while carrying out the work, they could potentially sue the business owner. With insurance in place, they can be reassured that they have financial protection if something unexpected happens.

What are the common challenges faced by dog businesses in terms of finding the right insurance?

The biggest challenge is understanding exactly what they need, which is why I am here to help. Many clients are just unsure about the kind of cover they need and what it will protect them from.

How can you help dog-related businesses get the cover they need?

I get to know them by having a chat about what their business involves, what activities they do, how many employees or volunteers they have and what equipment they use. I can then use this information to decide what their liabilities are and what insurance can help to provide protection in these cases.

I work through this process with them step-by-step to help them understand their needs and how they can benefit from the insurance cover we offer.

Why is the Canine Business Insurance offered by Chris Knott a great product for clients?

It is a useful product because we don’t offer something that is off-the-shelf. We tailor each policy to each business so that we know it is right for them. Our clients also get to deal with a bubbly, knowledgeable team who want to help them. We want to make the whole process easy for them and make sure they understand what they are buying and why.

We also give our clients real-life examples and scenarios so that they get a better understanding of when their insurance could come into play and what it can protect them against.

If there is a claim, we also have a great Claims Team who are very happy to help them through the claims process.

What do you enjoy most about working with clients for Canine Business Insurance?

I love learning about all the different types of dogs! There are gun dogs, water rescue dogs… So many different ones! Most of our team have dogs, so we can really relate to our clients and we love to learn about their individual businesses and what they get up to. The variation between businesses is so vast and it is so interesting to learn about all the things dogs can do.

Do you have any dogs yourself, and what do you get up to in your spare time?

I have a French Bulldog called Stamford who is now nearly three years old. In my spare time I love to take him to the beach for a walk my home is only 20 minutes away from the beach so it is a great escape. I’m very lucky to both live and work so close to the sea!

I enjoy taking long walks in general as well as meeting up with my friends. Relaxing in my garden in the sun with my housemate is also a new favourite pastime.
