Cars have always been a tempting target for thieves, but recent years have seen car theft rates increase dramatically.

In 2021/22, there were 108,542 motor thefts in England and Wales, a notable uptick on 2020/21. Car thieves are also becoming more sophisticated, which means that keyless entry cars are fast becoming favourite targets.

Because of the increased risks, more and more insurers are asking car owners to fit their vehicles with GPS trackers. These trackers can send alerts if a car is moved unexpectedly and allow the vehicle to be tracked and assist the police to recover them.

For this reason, we have partnered with specialist provider GAP Security, which fits insurance-approved tracking devices to all kinds of vehicles.

What is a car tracker?

A car tracker is usually a GPS tracking device that is fitted to your vehicle. The tracker uses a network of satellites to determine its location, which means it can send alerts if your car is unexpectedly moved. The car can then be remotely tracked and, hopefully, recovered.

Many of these trackers also now come with additional features. These include movement sensors, driver identification tags and remote and passive immobilisation.

It is typical for insurance-approved trackers to be monitored by a control centre, which is manned 24/7, 365 days a year. This ensures that a theft is detected quickly. To maintain this service, you will usually have to pay a subscription fee.

What are the benefits of a car tracker?

Although some car trackers may not necessarily stop your car from being stolen, you have a 95% chance of your vehicle being recovered if it was to happen, according to monitoring platform Global Telemetrics.

Because of this, many insurers will give you a discount on your Car Insurance. This is because you will reduce the risk of your vehicle being written-off. Going forward, you may even find that your insurer requests a tracker in order for you to take out cover with them.

A car tracker can also give you additional peace of mind if your car is particularly vulnerable. For instance, if you have a keyless entry car.

Who is GAP Security?

GAP Security has been working alongside the insurance industry since 1999. As a result, they only sell and fit car trackers, alarms and immobilisers that are insurer-approved. This means that they meet the stringent standards set by Thatcham Research.

Their trackers are installed for at a time and place that suits you, including some weekends (dependant on location).

Plus, they also offer European cover, which means that your car can be tracked even if it is shipped abroad.
