Young and new driver cover costs more because the statistics behind it are hard to argue with: drivers under 25, and anyone in their first year since passing their driving test regardless of age, are involved in more accidents per mile than experienced drivers, and insurers price for that risk. The good news is that "young driver insurance" isn't one product. It covers several different ways to insure a first car as a first-time or inexperienced driver, and choosing the right one can bring the cost down a long way from the headline quote.
Chris Knott Insurance arranges cover for young drivers and new drivers alike through a panel of specialist providers, including black box, named driver, student and pay-as-you-go options, rather than being tied to a single telematics product from one insurer. As an FCA-authorised broker that's arranged motor cover since 1983, we compare across that panel on your behalf rather than pushing one insurer's product. That matters because the cheapest option depends entirely on how, and how much, you drive.

Excellent service from start to finish. The team took time to understand exactly what I needed and found me a great policy at a competitive price. Couldn't be happier with the whole experience.
Been with Chris Knott for over 5 years now. Easy renewal process and the team are always a pleasure to speak with. Proper UK-based advice you can actually trust.
After being let down by my previous insurer, Chris Knott made the whole process painless. Honest, straightforward, and friendly from the very first call. Highly recommend them.
Andy was brilliant - talked me through all the options clearly, no pressure, and found me a much better deal than the comparison sites. This is how insurance should be done.
I needed specialist cover for my classic Jaguar and Chris Knott sorted it quickly and at a great price. Really impressed with the level of knowledge and personal service.
Switched my home insurance after a recommendation from a friend. Very competitive premium and the whole thing was done in under 20 minutes. Very pleased with everything.
First-class service. I dealt with Emma who was patient, helpful and knew exactly what I needed for my thatched cottage. Got proper specialist cover, not a standard policy.
Genuinely good old-fashioned customer service. A real person who actually listens and helps you find the right cover. Wouldn't go anywhere else for my insurance now.
Had a claim last year and Chris Knott supported me throughout. Made a stressful situation much easier. Fair, fast, and professional - exactly what you want from a broker.
Renewed my multi-car policy today. Still the best value I've found anywhere and the team remembered me from last year. That personal touch really makes a difference.
Very helpful team, especially when I needed to add a modified vehicle to my policy. Talked me through everything and made sure I was properly covered. Excellent all round.
Chris Knott have been brilliant for my listed property - most insurers wouldn't touch it but they found me comprehensive cover at a sensible price. Grateful for their expertise.
Efficient, clear, and competitive. I ran through three comparison sites before calling Chris Knott and they beat them all. UK-based team made the whole thing painless.
Outstanding from start to finish. I've recommended Chris Knott to everyone I know - my parents, my sister, and even my colleagues. They never let anyone down.
The service is what sets Chris Knott apart. You get proper advice from people who understand insurance, not a script. Worth every penny and more.
Insurers set premiums on claims data, and drivers aged 17 to 24 have statistically more accidents, and more serious ones, than any other age group. It isn't really about age itself: a 40-year-old who's just passed their test faces many of the same higher premiums as a 17-year-old, because it's inexperience behind the wheel that drives the risk, not the date on your licence. Vehicle choice, where you live, and how the car is used all affect the price too, but for anyone new to driving, experience is the biggest single factor an insurer can't get around.
Car insurance comes in three levels of cover:
•Third-party only meets the legal minimum and pays for damage you cause to someone else, but nothing for your own car.
•Third-party, fire and theft adds cover if your car is stolen or damaged by fire, again with nothing for damage you cause in an accident.
• Comprehensive covers damage to your own car as well as everyone else's, minus your excess, which is why most drivers choose it.
Most of the young and new driver schemes we arrange, including black box, named driver, student and pay-as-you-go cover, are underwritten on a comprehensive basis. That's standard practice for this type of insurance: providers price by measured driving behaviour or a controlled, fixed-cost policy rather than by offering several tiers, and third-party cover often works out no cheaper than comprehensive once a new driver's risk is factored in. In practice, that means your own car is protected from day one, not just anyone else's.
A small telematics device, or an app on your phone, tracks things like braking, cornering and the time of day you drive. Safer driving is rewarded with lower premiums over time, which suits anyone confident in their driving but frustrated by a high starting quote. It isn't the right fit for very short-term cover or if you're already insured as an additional driver on someone else's policy.

This sets a young driver up as the main, insured user of their parent's car or a family member's vehicle, rather than as an add-on to an existing policy. It works well for drivers aged 17 to 27 who mostly use one family vehicle, since it lets them build their own no-claims discount from scratch without pushing up the cost of insuring the car. It doesn't suit anyone wanting to insure a car in their own name.
This is different from fronting, where a young driver is listed as a named or additional driver on a parent's policy while actually being the car's main user. Fronting is a form of insurance fraud, and it can void a claim entirely, even one that wasn't the young driver's fault. Named Young Driver Cover exists precisely so a young driver can be the genuine, named policyholder on a family car, rather than being fronted on somebody else's.
Ideal for:
Not suitable for:
Cover by the week rather than the year, aimed at students who occasionally borrow a friend's or family member's car during term time or holidays. It protects the vehicle owner's no-claims discount while they lend the car, which makes it a genuinely different product from a normal short-term policy rather than just a smaller version of one.
Ideal for:
Not suitable for:
Premiums are based on the miles actually driven, which suits new drivers who don't use a car often, students home for the holidays, or anyone building experience gradually rather than driving daily. It isn't designed for higher-mileage drivers, where a standard annual policy usually works out cheaper.
Ideal for:
Not suitable for:
Cover built specifically for learner drivers, from a single lesson up to several months, so you can practise in a family member's or friend's car without affecting their no-claims discount. Chris Knott arranges learner driver insurance as its own scheme, separate from cover for drivers who've already passed their test.

Your learner insurance stops working the moment you pass, even if it hasn't reached its end date, because it's built around supervised practice rather than driving solo. You'll need your own cover in place before you drive away from the test centre, since it's illegal to drive uninsured even for a short journey home.
Most new drivers have no no-claims discount yet, which is exactly the gap that black box, named driver and pay-as-you-go cover are designed to fill, rather than there being one obvious next step for everyone. Arranging cover before your test, so it's ready to activate the moment you pass, means you're not left comparing options at the roadside.
Fitting a black box is the single biggest lever most new drivers have, since it replaces a generic risk estimate with evidence of how you actually drive. Paying annually rather than monthly usually costs less overall, because monthly plans typically include interest. Adding a more experienced second driver, such as a parent, can lower the premium too, provided that person is genuinely expected to drive the car and isn't just added to game the price, which insurers do check for. Extra security, such as an alarm or a tracker, and building a no-claims discount steadily rather than making small claims that cost more in lost discount than they're worth, both help too.
There's more you can do beyond the policy itself:
•Choose a car in a low insurance group. Groups run from 1 to 50, and a lower group usually means a smaller engine, cheaper parts and a lower theft risk, all of which bring the quote down.
•Keep your annual mileage realistic. Fewer miles driven each year statistically means fewer chances of a claim, so it pays to give an accurate figure rather than rounding up "just in case."
•Park off the road overnight where you can, such as on a driveway or in a garage rather than on the street, since insurers price in the risk of a car left in the open.
•Take on a voluntary excess on top of the compulsory one. This lowers your premium, provided it's still an amount you could afford to pay if you ever needed to claim.
•Complete a recognised driving course after passing your test, such as Pass Plus or an advanced course through RoSPA, since some insurers offer a discount for the extra, assessed experience.
•Compare quotes like for like, checking the excess and any add-ons as well as the headline price, since a cheaper quote with a higher excess or fewer extras isn't always the better deal.
Because Chris Knott works across a panel of specialist insurers rather than selling one telematics product, the right option for a nervous new motorway driver looking for feedback on their driving is often different from the right option for a student borrowing a parent's car twice a month, and we can compare across both rather than fitting everyone into the same box. We're a UK-based broker that's been arranging cover since 1983, with a 4.9-star Trustpilot rating from over 2,200 reviews you can check yourself rather than take on trust, and we're not on the comparison sites. We're authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 304452), and you can verify that on the Financial Services Register at register.fca.org.uk.
That's the real advantage of a broker over a comparison site or a single insurer directly: we search a specialist panel on your behalf and can talk you through the trade-offs in plain English, not just rank quotes by price.
Most insurers define young drivers as under 25, and a new driver as anyone who passed their driving test within the last year or so, regardless of age. Both groups are priced similarly because the underlying issue is the same: less time spent driving unsupervised, which is what statistically predicts accidents, not the driver's age on its own.
There's no fixed answer, because the type of cover you choose changes the price as much as your age does. A black box policy might start high and fall as your driving history builds, while adding an experienced driver or choosing student cover can be considerably cheaper from day one if it suits how you actually use a car. The best way to know is to compare the options against your own situation rather than assume the first quote you see is the only one available.
It's built to lower your premium, not just to monitor you. The device or app measures driving behaviour like harsh braking and speed against known accident risk factors, and insurers reward lower-risk driving with cheaper renewals. Most policies also give a live score you can check, so it works as feedback on your driving as much as a pricing tool.
Yes, that's exactly what named young driver insurance is designed for. It sets the young driver up as the main policyholder on that specific car, so they build their own no-claims history from the start, while the parent's own no-claims discount on their main vehicle stays untouched.
Yes, if you want to practise outside of paid lessons. A driving instructor's insurance only covers you in their car during a lesson, so practising in a family member's or friend's car in between lessons needs its own learner policy, otherwise that car isn't legally insured for you to drive it.
You can make a claim by contacting our team directly, and we'll talk you through what's needed. Having your policy details and a description of what happened ready speeds things up, particularly for newer drivers who haven't been through the claims process before.
