What makes insuring a Humber different?

What makes insuring a Humber different?

Classic Humbers represent an important chapter in British automotive heritage. Established in 1868 and producing vehicles until 1976, Humber built a reputation for manufacturing prestigious cars that were favoured by the British establishment, including the Royal Family.

These vehicles combined luxury with engineering excellence, creating cars that stood apart from their contemporaries. Today, surviving Humbers are treasured classics that continue to appreciate in value. Their age and rarity mean that standard car insurance policies cannot properly account for their true worth or the specialist knowledge required for maintenance and repairs.

Their status as collector vehicles rather than everyday transport requires insurance that understands what makes a Humber special.

The Need

Why do you need specialist Humber insurance?

Standard car insurance falls short when covering classic Humbers. Regular policies fail to address the key aspects of Humber ownership, including:

  • The appreciating value of these increasingly rare British classics
  • The need for agreed valuation rather than market depreciation
  • The particular parts and restoration challenges of vehicles no longer in production
  • The careful, limited usage patterns typical of classic car owners
  • The specialist knowledge required for proper repairs
  • Attendance at classic car shows, rallies and Humber owners’ club events
  • The historical significance that makes these cars cultural artefacts

Our tailored Humber insurance recognises the true value of your classic while providing practical cover for how enthusiasts actually use and enjoy these vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Humber Insurance Questions Answered

The most common questions we're asked about Humber insurance. Can't find what you're looking for? Speak to our UK-based team on 0800 917 2274.

Does my Humber qualify for classic car cover?

Yes. Humber production ended in 1976, so a Super Snipe, Hawk, Imperial or Sceptre is comfortably old enough for classic terms. Most insurers on our panel also want the car to be a second vehicle rather than a daily driver, with limited annual mileage and secure overnight parking. Tell our UK-based team how you use the car and we will confirm the fit.

Can I insure my Super Snipe or Hawk on an agreed value basis?

Agreed value cover suits most well-kept Humbers. A concours Super Snipe MkIV or Hawk Series IV is worth well beyond a mainstream book figure, so a market-value settlement can leave you short after a total loss. Send us photos, receipts and a Post Vintage Humber Car Club valuation and we will set the sum insured to a realistic figure.

Can I get limited-mileage cover for my Humber?

Yes, and it is the usual choice. Typical limits of 1,500, 3,000 or 5,000 miles a year suit a Sceptre or Imperial that only leaves the garage for club runs and summer shows. Pick a mileage that leaves a buffer for longer trips and we will quote against it on the panel.

Do Post Vintage Humber Car Club members get a discount?

Several insurers on our panel recognise Post Vintage Humber Car Club and Association of Rootes Car Clubs membership as a sign of an engaged, careful owner and apply a club rate. Share your membership number when you quote and our UK-based team will check whether a discount is available for your model and postcode.

Can I run my Humber alongside another car on one policy?

Yes. A multi-car policy that covers your Humber and your daily driver under one schedule usually works out cheaper than two standalone policies, with a single renewal date to remember. Each car keeps its own cover level, so the Humber can run on limited mileage while the everyday car runs on full use.

Can I get laid-up cover while my Humber is off the road?

Yes. If your Humber is SORN for winter or part-way through a restoration, laid-up cover protects against fire, theft and accidental damage in storage at a much lower cost than full road cover. You can upgrade back to driving cover when the car is ready for the road again.
