If you've brought a car into the UK from the Netherlands, arranging the right insurance often takes a more specialist approach than a standard policy provides. The Netherlands is one of Europe's busiest used-car trading hubs, so a Dutch import can mean anything from a left-hand drive family car bought through a Dutch dealer to a rare Spyker sports car, and not every insurer is set up to assess either properly.
Chris Knott Insurance has arranged specialist motor insurance since 1983. We work with insurers who understand imported vehicles, so your cover reflects how the car is actually built and used rather than a standard UK template.
Excellent service from start to finish. The team took time to understand exactly what I needed and found me a great policy at a competitive price. Couldn't be happier with the whole experience.
Been with Chris Knott for over 5 years now. Easy renewal process and the team are always a pleasure to speak with. Proper UK-based advice you can actually trust.
After being let down by my previous insurer, Chris Knott made the whole process painless. Honest, straightforward, and friendly from the very first call. Highly recommend them.
Andy was brilliant - talked me through all the options clearly, no pressure, and found me a much better deal than the comparison sites. This is how insurance should be done.
I needed specialist cover for my classic Jaguar and Chris Knott sorted it quickly and at a great price. Really impressed with the level of knowledge and personal service.
Switched my home insurance after a recommendation from a friend. Very competitive premium and the whole thing was done in under 20 minutes. Very pleased with everything.
First-class service. I dealt with Emma who was patient, helpful and knew exactly what I needed for my thatched cottage. Got proper specialist cover, not a standard policy.
Genuinely good old-fashioned customer service. A real person who actually listens and helps you find the right cover. Wouldn't go anywhere else for my insurance now.
Had a claim last year and Chris Knott supported me throughout. Made a stressful situation much easier. Fair, fast, and professional - exactly what you want from a broker.
Renewed my multi-car policy today. Still the best value I've found anywhere and the team remembered me from last year. That personal touch really makes a difference.
Very helpful team, especially when I needed to add a modified vehicle to my policy. Talked me through everything and made sure I was properly covered. Excellent all round.
Chris Knott have been brilliant for my listed property - most insurers wouldn't touch it but they found me comprehensive cover at a sensible price. Grateful for their expertise.
Efficient, clear, and competitive. I ran through three comparison sites before calling Chris Knott and they beat them all. UK-based team made the whole thing painless.
Outstanding from start to finish. I've recommended Chris Knott to everyone I know - my parents, my sister, and even my colleagues. They never let anyone down.
The service is what sets Chris Knott apart. You get proper advice from people who understand insurance, not a script. Worth every penny and more.
The Netherlands doesn't have a large domestic car industry in the way Germany or France does, but there's more Dutch motoring history here than people expect. Spyker is a real Dutch marque, founded in 1880 and revived in 1999 to build hand-built sports cars like the C8, and it's never had much of a UK dealer network, which makes most examples here a personal import in every sense. Older DAF cars, built in the Netherlands until DAF's car division was sold to Volvo in 1975, still turn up in the classic car scene as distinctive Dutch classics.
There's also a more everyday route into a Dutch import: the VDL Nedcar plant in Born builds cars for other manufacturers under contract, including the current MINI Countryman and, in the past, Mitsubishi and Smart models, so a "Dutch-built" car might carry a badge you wouldn't expect.
Beyond that, we regularly insure Dutch-sourced left-hand drive cars, campervans and everyday European models bought through Dutch dealers or auctions, which is one of the more common ways UK buyers end up with a left-hand drive vehicle in the first place.
Standard UK insurers are built around right-hand drive, UK-specification vehicles, and a Dutch import can differ in several ways that affect how a policy should be set up:
Because most standard-production Dutch-registered cars already carry EU type-approval, registering one in the UK is usually more about DVLA paperwork, including a NOVA declaration and evidence of the car's VAT and BPM status, than the full Individual Vehicle Approval test that a non-EU import like a JDM or US car typically needs. Anything unusual, heavily modified, or built outside standard EU rules may still need an IVA test, so it's worth checking your specific vehicle's status before you apply for UK registration.
Yes. Whether your Dutch import has performance modifications, aesthetic changes, or adjustments made specifically to meet UK road requirements, such as headlight beam pattern changes for driving on the left, we can arrange cover for it. Every modification needs to be declared when you get a quote, so it's properly reflected in your policy rather than something that only comes up if you need to claim.
The most common questions we're asked about Dutch import car insurance. Can't find what you're looking for? Speak to our UK-based team on 0800 917 2274.
You'll typically need your Dutch registration documents, evidence of the vehicle's export or BPM refund status from the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority), a valid MOT once the car is UK-registered, proof of the car's value, and your previous insurance history. Our team can talk you through exactly what applies to your specific vehicle and how far along the registration process you are.
Often, yes. We may be able to arrange cover based on the vehicle's identification number (VIN) while the DVLA registration process is still ongoing, so you're not left without valid insurance while the paperwork catches up.
Joining an owners' club for your specific make, fitting approved security devices, agreeing a limited annual mileage, and maintaining a clean driving record can all help bring the cost down. For rarer or higher-value imports, agreed value cover is also worth discussing, since it fixes what the car is insured for rather than leaving it to a standard market valuation.
Yes. A large proportion of Dutch imports stay left-hand drive, and our team has genuine experience arranging cover for left-hand drive vehicles rather than treating them as an edge case.
We offer comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, and third-party only cover, with options including breakdown cover, windscreen cover, and agreed value insurance for cars where an accurate valuation matters more than a standard market estimate.
