What makes Reliant vehicles special to insure?

What makes Reliant vehicles special to insure?

Reliant Motor Company produced some of Britain’s most distinctive vehicles from 1935 to 2002, creating everything from the famous three-wheeled Robin to the elegant four-wheeled Scimitar sports cars. These vehicles occupy a unique position in British motoring culture, combining practical engineering with distinctive design that makes them instantly recognisable.

The three-wheeled models, including the Robin, Regal, and Rialto, were designed to be driven on a motorcycle licence, making them accessible to a generation of drivers who might otherwise have been excluded from car ownership. This practical approach to personal transport created a loyal following that continues today, with many owners cherishing these vehicles for their simplicity, economy, and distinctive character.

The four-wheeled models, particularly the Scimitar range, represented Reliant’s move into the sports car market. The Scimitar GTE, in particular, became famous as Princess Anne’s preferred vehicle and established Reliant’s reputation for building practical yet stylish sports cars with fibreglass bodies.

What factors influence your Reliant car insurance premium?

What factors influence your Reliant car insurance premium?

Understanding the elements that affect your costs helps you make informed decisions about cover and risk management. Several factors impact the cost of insuring a Reliant:

  • Vehicle Model and Type – Three-wheelers typically cost less to insure than four-wheeled sports models
  • Age and Condition – Well-maintained classics often qualify for preferential rates
  • Driver Profile – Experience with classic or unusual vehicles is valued by tailored insurers
  • Storage Arrangements – Secure garage storage can significantly reduce premiums
  • Annual Mileage – Limited mileage classic car policies offer substantial savings
  • Intended Use – Show and pleasure use typically attracts lower premiums than daily driving
Storage and Security

Where and how you store your Reliant significantly impacts your premium. These vehicles were often targets for theft in their heyday, and secure storage remains important for maintaining low premiums. Garage storage with additional security measures, such as alarms and immobilisers, can help reduce costs whilst protecting your investment.

Driving Experience

Your experience with classic vehicles, three-wheelers, or similar tailored cars can positively influence your premium. Our insurers recognise that Reliant owners are typically enthusiasts who understand and respect their vehicles’ characteristics.

Usage Patterns

Many Reliant owners use their vehicles for weekend drives, classic car shows, or as part of a collection rather than daily transport. Our insurers' policies can be tailored to reflect this usage pattern, often resulting in significant premium savings compared to standard motor policies.

What coverage options are available for your Reliant?

Our insurance policies can be tailored to include a wide range of cover options designed specifically for classic and tailored vehicle ownership.

Core Cover Elements
  • Comprehensive Physical Damage – Protection against collision, theft, vandalism, and other perils. Given the age and tailored nature of many Reliant vehicles, comprehensive cover sources essential peace of mind.
  • Third Party Liability – Mandatory cover that protects you against claims from other parties. We can arrange appropriate liability limits that reflect modern requirements whilst maintaining suitable premiums.
  • Agreed Value Protection – Essential for appreciating classics, agreed value cover ensures you receive the full agreed-upon value in the event of a total loss, rather than a depreciated market value that may not reflect your vehicle’s true worth.
Tailored Enhancements
  • Classic Car Show Cover – Protection whilst participating in shows, rallies, and enthusiast events, including cover for awards, trophies, and personal effects.
  • Breakdown and Recovery – Tailored breakdown cover that understands the unique requirements of classic and three-wheeler vehicles, including flatbed recovery when required.
  • Spare Parts Cover – Protection for valuable spare parts and components, particularly important for vehicles where parts availability may be limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Reliant Insurance Questions Answered

The most common questions we're asked about Reliant insurance. Can't find what you're looking for? Speak to our UK-based team on 0800 917 2274.

Can you arrange agreed-value cover for a Reliant Scimitar or Robin?

Yes. Market values for Reliants vary wildly and a standard settlement rarely reflects what a tidy Scimitar GTE or Bond Bug is really worth. We can arrange agreed-value cover so the figure is fixed in writing at the start of the policy. You'll usually need dated photos, a written spec and a recent valuation from a recognised Reliant specialist or owners' club.

Do Reliant Owners' Club members get a discount?

Some of the insurers on our panel offer preferential terms for members of recognised clubs such as the Reliant Owners Club, Reliant Sabre & Scimitar Owners Club and the Bond Owners Club. Membership shows an insurer that you take the car seriously and usually garage it. Mention your club when you call and we'll factor it in.

Can I insure my Reliant on a limited-mileage policy?

Most Reliant owners rack up well under 3,000 miles a year, so a limited-mileage policy usually works out cheaper than standard cover. Typical bands are 1,500, 3,000 or 5,000 miles. Keep a note of your odometer at renewal and be honest about how you use the car - exceeding your agreed mileage can affect a claim later on.

Is cover available while my Reliant is laid up over winter?

Yes. Laid-up or garaged-only cover protects a Reliant against fire, theft and accidental damage while it's off the road - useful if you put the Scimitar or Robin away from November to March. You can't drive the car on the road during the laid-up period, but the policy keeps it protected and often costs a fraction of standard cover.

Can you arrange cover during a restoration?

Yes. Lots of Reliant owners are part-way through a Kitten or Scimitar GTE rebuild and want the car insured against fire or theft in the workshop. We can arrange restoration cover that protects the car and sometimes the parts and panels around it. The insurer will want photos, a storage description and a reasonable idea of the finished value.

Can I put a Reliant and my daily car on one policy?

Yes. Multi-car policies are popular with Reliant owners who use a modern car daily and keep the three-wheeler or Scimitar for fair-weather runs and shows. One renewal date, one set of documents and often a better combined price than two stand-alone policies. Each driver and each car still has to be declared in full when you quote.

What happens if my Reliant is written off?

If you've set the policy up on an agreed-value basis, you should receive the agreed figure shown on your schedule rather than a disputed market value. On a classic policy you usually also have the option to buy the salvage back for a reasonable fee, which matters on cars like the Scimitar where a rebuildable shell is still worth saving.

Does my Reliant Robin need to be driven on a B1 or full car licence?

Three-wheeled Reliants under 550kg can be driven on a full motorcycle licence as well as a car licence, which is one of the reasons they've always had a following. Either way, the insurer will want your full licence details when you quote. Let our team know which licence you hold and we'll match you with an insurer on our panel who's happy with that.
