What makes insuring a Subaru unique?

What makes insuring a Subaru unique?

Subaru vehicles occupy a special place in the automotive landscape. Known for their distinctive boxer engines, symmetrical all-wheel drive systems, and rally heritage, these cars often require specialist understanding from insurers who appreciate their engineering and enthusiast appeal.

Many Subaru models, particularly the WRX STI, Impreza Turbo, and Legacy variants, are popular choices for modification and performance enhancement. This enthusiast following means that standard insurers may not fully understand the true value and specialist requirements of these vehicles.

The brand's strong rally heritage and association with performance driving also means that Subaru owners often participate in track days, rally events, and driving experiences that require specialist coverage arrangements.

Our specialist insurers understand the Subaru community and can provide appropriate coverage that reflects both the practical and performance aspects of ownership.

Our specialist arrangements cover the complete Subaru range, from current production models through to classic imports and rare performance variants.

Current Production Models

  • Subaru WRX and WRX STI - The flagship performance models that carry forward Subaru's rally heritage with turbocharged power and advanced all-wheel drive systems
  • Subaru BRZ - The rear-wheel drive sports car developed with Toyota, popular with driving enthusiasts and often modified for enhanced performance
  • Subaru Forester - The practical SUV that combines Subaru's all-wheel drive capability with family-friendly versatility
  • Subaru Outback - The rugged estate that bridges the gap between car and SUV, popular with outdoor enthusiasts
  • Subaru XV - The compact crossover that brings Subaru capability to a smaller, more urban-friendly package

Classic and Import Models

For owners of classic Subaru models including the legendary Impreza 22B, various STI versions, Legacy RS models, or rare JDM imports, we understand that these vehicles often require specialist agreed value coverage that reflects their enthusiast status and appreciating values.

Japanese imports, whether official or grey imports, require particular expertise as they may have different specifications, higher performance levels, or unique features not found on UK market vehicles.

What factors influence your Subaru insurance premium?

What factors influence your Subaru insurance premium?

Understanding the elements that affect your costs helps you make informed decisions about coverage and risk management. Several factors impact the cost of insuring a Subaru:

  • Model and Performance Level - Higher performance models like the STI typically cost more to insure than practical models like the Forester
  • Modification Status - Declared modifications are assessed individually, with some potentially reducing premiums while others may increase them
  • Import Status - JDM imports or grey imports may require specialist assessment and coverage
  • Driver Profile - Age, driving history, and location all influence premiums, particularly for high-performance models
  • Usage Patterns - Daily commuting versus weekend use affects risk assessment
  • Security and Storage - Secure parking and additional security measures can help reduce premiums
  • Annual Mileage - Lower mileage policies can offer significant savings for enthusiast vehicles

Enthusiast Considerations

Many Subaru owners are members of clubs or forums, participate in meets and events, or use their vehicles for specific activities like green laning or track days. Our insurers can take these factors into account when assessing risk and may offer preferential rates for club members.

Seasonal Usage

Some Subaru owners, particularly those with performance models, use their vehicles seasonally or for specific purposes. Our policies can be tailored to reflect these usage patterns, potentially offering cost savings for vehicles that aren't used year-round.

What coverage options are available for your Subaru?

Our comprehensive policies can be tailored to include a wide range of coverage options designed specifically for Subaru ownership patterns.

Core Coverage Elements

Comprehensive Physical Damage - Full protection against collision, theft, vandalism, weather damage, and other risks. This is particularly important for modified or import vehicles where replacement parts may be expensive or difficult to source.

Third Party Liability - Essential coverage that protects you against claims from other parties. We recommend appropriate liability limits that reflect your circumstances and the performance of your vehicle.

Agreed Value Protection - Particularly important for classic, rare, or heavily modified Subaru vehicles where standard market valuations may not reflect true worth.

Specialist Enhancements

Modification Coverage - Comprehensive protection for declared modifications, ensuring your investment in performance or aesthetic enhancements is properly covered.

Import Vehicle Protection - Specialist coverage for JDM imports or grey imports that may have unique specifications or higher values than UK equivalents.

Track Day Coverage - Optional extension for owners who participate in track events, driving experiences, or motorsport activities.

Breakdown and Recovery - Particularly valuable for modified vehicles that may require specialist recovery or repair services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Subaru Insurance Questions Answered

The most common questions we're asked about Subaru insurance. Can't find what you're looking for? Speak to our UK-based team on 0800 917 2274.

Can you cover a modified Impreza or WRX STI?

Yes, we arrange cover for modified Subarus every day. Remaps, uprated turbos, coilovers, bigger intercoolers and full rolling-road maps are all common on the Impreza and WRX STI scene. Declare each modification honestly and our UK-based team will match you with an insurer on our panel who understands the tuning world rather than penalising you for it.

Do you arrange cover for JDM Subaru imports?

Yes. Japanese-market Imprezas, Legacy B4s, Forester STIs and cars like the rare 22B come up on our books regularly. We can arrange cover for grey and parallel imports, including cars brought in under the personal import route. You'll need V5, NOVA paperwork and any dating certificate to hand so we can set up the policy properly.

Can I insure a Subaru used for rallying or track days?

Standard road policies don't cover competitive motorsport or timed track sessions, but we can arrange specialist cover that extends to sprints, rally stages or track days at approved UK circuits. Terms depend on the car, the event and your experience. Call our team before booking and we'll talk you through what a policy will and won't pick up.

Is agreed-value cover available for a classic Legacy Turbo or 22B?

Yes. Values on cars like the 22B STI, RB5 and first-generation Legacy Turbo have climbed sharply, and standard market-value settlements rarely do them justice. We can arrange agreed-value cover so the figure is locked in writing upfront. You'll usually need photos, a written spec and a recent valuation from a recognised Subaru specialist or owners' club.

Can I put a daily Forester and a weekend Impreza on one policy?

Yes. Multi-car policies are popular with Subaru owners who use a Forester or Outback day-to-day and keep an Impreza, BRZ or classic turbo for weekends. One renewal date, one set of documents and often a better combined price than two separate policies. Each driver and each car still has to be declared in full.

How is limited-mileage cover useful for a weekend Subaru?

If your Impreza or BRZ only sees dry weekends and the odd show, a limited-mileage policy can reduce the premium significantly. Typical bands are 3,000, 5,000 or 7,500 miles a year. Be realistic when you choose a band - exceeding the agreed mileage can affect a claim. Our team will talk you through the trade-offs.

Does cover include trackers and security upgrades?

Fitted Subarus remain a theft target, so insurers on our panel often want to see a Thatcham-rated tracker or immobiliser on higher-value cars. Declare any upgrades - factory or aftermarket - when you quote. In many cases a good tracker, secure parking and a sensible annual mileage combine to bring the premium down noticeably.
